OVERVIEW ON THE LESSON: AFTER COMPLETING A MINI-UNIT ON SOCIAL STUDIES SKILLS, GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORIOGRAPHY,  MY STUDENTS BEGIN TO PONDER WHY OUR WORLD IS HOW IT IS TODAY AND WHY IT HAS ARRIVED AT THIS POINT. THIS LESSON IS DESIGNED TO ACT AS A PRIMER FOR ONE WHO IS ABOUT TO CHART HIS/HER WAY THROUGH HISTORY, BEGGINING WITH THE EARLIEST OF CIVILIZATIONS, AND ENDING WITH TODAY'S WORLD. ESSENTIALLY, IT ASKS THE STUDENT TO ASK WHY THERE IS SUCH AN IMBALANCE, NAMELY ECONOMIC IMBALANCE, AMONG THE WORLD'S VARIOUS NATIONS!!!
TIME NEEDED:  Two to three 40 minute periods
RESOURCES: The below file, a map of the world, colored pencils and of course, higher order thinking skills
    COMPLETING THE LESSON:
- Have the students look up the definitions of the italicized terms in the below file and then come to a consensus with the definition
- Give them the general answers to the italicized headings
-Have the students analyze the statistics and place the nations on the statistics sheet under the proper headings
- Discuss your findings
- Place the nations on the map designating them with a color for each of the three types of nations - the color should be symbolic of the type of nation
- Make inferences based on the map and complete the non-italicized sections
- Have students do the Journal
